That Perfect Balance
This Kiss - Faith Hill
One time when I was driving my drunk sister home I asked her to put this song on and a few minutes later she was like, “I simply can’t find Miss Kiss.” I couldn’t believe it. “Say that again?” I responded. “Well, first I searched Mrs. Kiss, but that didn’t work, so then I tried Miss Kiss and that’s not it either.” Make sure you give your younger sister some love, they’re trying their best out there manIncinerate - Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth is one of those bands that the fan-bases make it way harder for me to get into them. They remind me of Rick and Morty fans, or the people who are really into Slice of Life anime series’. They get all riled up about that shit for no reason and alienate potential newcomers. This track is a great introduction to them, though. Maybe go listen to some more of them. I wouldn’t dare to wear some of their merch in public though, you’ll get hit with the “Name Three Songs” damn near immediatelySwingin Spathiphyllums - Mort Garson
Describing music, especially music with no lyrics, as cute is hit or miss, I think. This song off of Mort’s 1976 synth masterpiece Mother Earth’s Plantasia is so fucking cute though dude. This one makes me want to face a Lousiville Slugger, curl up next to bae, and eat a nice hot piece of pie with ice cream on the side, I’m talking a-la-modeLife During Wartime (Live) - Talking Heads
Talking Heads at the peak of their combined powers for sure. So funky, so fun, so eclectic and interesting, there’s a little something for everyone on this joint. Stop Making Sense is one of the greatest live albums of all time, and this version of Life During Wartime helps to solidify thatYou Comfort Me - James Vickery feat. EARTHGANG
I found this song while browsing Instagram one day, which is actually how I come across more music than you might think. Aggregator pages and the Discover feed allow me to cast that wide net to keep this whole engine running. Hailing from South London, Vickery is gunning for the top of the British R&B game and this track, featuring a slick little verse from Olu of EARTHGANG, could help to cement his spotLook out for My Love - Neil Young
There’s so much amazing Neil Young music that it’s really hard for me not to put something by him on every list I make. Something that always inspires me about Young is his ability to showcase the beauty in mastering the simple. That’s not to say that what Neil Young does is easy by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s able to create amazing music with very few frills and distractions. A true poetNo Importa La Distancia - Ricky Martin
When I was a young boy I was absolutely convinced that I looked just like Ricky Martin. I was Ricky Martin for Halloween one year for Gods sake. The original Go The Distance makes me cry every time I listen to it, and Hercules is a top 3 Disney movie for me, and this cover maintains that spirit. Goosebump alert
Life is all about balance. For me, I like to have a perfect 50/50 ratio of tater tots to dinosaur chicken nuggets. Finding that balance, tapping in to that perfect ratio, that’s how you come out on top. See you next week
