5 O’Clock Somewhere
Waiting For Your Love - A Great Big Pile Of Leaves: If you want to throw on a band when you’re hanging out with someone that you don’t really know, Great Big is a phenomenal choice. The perfect blend of airy and clean tones with downright cute lyrics and real technical musicianship, the New York natives have become my go to for anything from a drive to the store to pouring that first glass of wine of the evening with the boo. This cut off their first record in 8 years is one of those songs that you send out onto the airwaves for that special someone
Dirt and Grime - Father’s Children: Okay, yeah, let’s address the elephant in the room. Ole Kanye West and his good buddy Charlie Heat threw a sample of this song on Pablo. This track was originally supposed to be released in 1970, but wouldn’t end up getting released for over 40 years, finally emerging through The Numero Group label in 2011. This song feels like walking through the bead curtain at your homies dealers’ house. He’s a cool guy, the dealer, and he makes you feel safe and welcomed. Hell, he even lets you take a bong rip at the crib, and his dog is really cute. But even through all of it, you realize you’re already in the Lion’s Den
Strawberry Tea - Tiny Tim: I’m sure that we can all agree that we know Tiny Tim through the Spongebob Squarepants bit. He’s the dude who plays the ukelele and has the wild hair and the voice and everything. This track is solid as fuck though. It’s got that little piano that the little lads who liked berry’s and cream played in the olden days. Is that a cool breeze wafting through your room through open Venetian windows, bringing with it the comforting smell of fresh baked croissant and clove cigarettes, or is that Tiny Tim singing about Strawberry Tea? Well, depends on where you are, I guess
Gandagana - Bani: I don’t want it to seem like I know everything about Georgia (the country, not the state. But still Go Dawgs). I know, in fact, almost nothing about the country that sits at the perfect transition point between Eastern Europe and Western Asia, but I do know that this song fucking goes dog. I’m an absolute sucker for vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar, so you know I had to hang glide through with this one. I discovered this track because it was posted on a training montage of one of my favorite UFC Bantamweights, Merab Dvalishvili. The Machine is an absolute savage, currently one of the PFP best takedown artists in the promotion, and according to his teammate Al Iaquinta, he’s like Lebron James over there
XanaX Damage - Future: Man, I have so much to say about this track. I think that Future is a once in a generation talent, a Hip Hop GOAT, because of his ability to tap into his vulnerability. There are a lot of people who sound like Future, who vulch the flow and the look and the subject matter, and everything that contributes to his success. But one thing the imitators can’t ape is his ability to be emotionally raw. Codeine Crazy, Purple Reign, My Collection, the list goes on and on. I’ll take sensitive Future over any of your favorite rappers bro
One Spliff A Day - Billy Boyo: Arguably the most prolific child-DJ of the late 1970’s, Billy Boyo rolls through the Tent House with one message and one message only; “One spliff a day keep the evil away.” I’m not one to turn my nose up at good advice, so, I’m gonna try whatever I can to keep the evil away
Breakfast At Tiffany’s - Deep Blue Something: This song to me is like smelling something that transports you back, body and soul, to your childhood and the positive experience associated with that scent. I’m 8 years old, I’m chilling in the back seat of my dad’s red F-150, my brother has a baseball game and I just got Pokemon Ruby for my Gameboy SP so I don’t even give a fuck. Weird how that can happen to you. I wouldn’t fully understand all the words of the chorus until 18 years later when I heard this song again on the way back to the warehouse from a Smokemade event
Sally Ann - Oscar Jenkins, Fred Cockerham, and Tommy Jerrell: So many legends on this track man, Fred Cockerham one of the banjo GOATs, Tommy Jerrell the fiddle assassin, and ole Oscar Jenkins plucking that 6 string. I don’t really like to describe things as a “romp” but fuck me if this song ain’t a romp bro
Wake Up - Cheese People: I’ve gotten in to the habit of getting a nice 4PM iced Americano from the coffee shop on my days off. I’m not necessarily tired, but I love a little kick in the behind to get me through the rest of the day. This is gonna be your 4PM iced Americano for the rest of your morning/day/evening
There’s a few feelings better than getting all your tasks done, getting a nice shower, settling down on the couch and cracking the first beer of the weekend. Shit, it doesn’t matter to me when that first beer of the weekend gets cracked, cause I live in the understanding that it is, in fact, 5 O’Clock Somewhere
